“Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating
yourself.” –George Bernard Shaw
Is there a better way to help a child create themselves than through art? Research states that children with an art education possess better problem solving techniques, have a greater willingness to explore new ideas, experience the world from different perspectives and gain a greater sense of self-esteem. These qualities would facilitate a successful life in any career path choosen.
I will manage my art room like I would a classroom. I feel art education, while fun and requires no restrictions on a child’s imagination, does needs rules and procedures like any classroom. Without set expectations the room would be chaotic, not conducive to learning or creating, and riddled with behavior problems. Students will have assigned seats, daily assigned jobs and would be required to maintain an indoor voice level. With these classroom procedures in place, my room can be one of exploration. I appreciate many outlets of art and enjoy learning new techniques and experimenting with new tools and mediums. I will pass on this openness to my students. From ceramics, printmaking, mixed media and even installation art, our art class will experiment with many different forms of art. Through exploration my students will develop all these wonderful attributes research has proven art education to instill in children.
Art doesn't just make us think, it makes us feel. It gives children an outlet to express themselves, convey their feelings and point of view without saying a word. A child with this amount of self expression is free to create themselves in any way imaginable.
