Keith Haring Project
Description:
Using Keith Haring's work as inspiration, students will create their own life size mural. Working in small groups, they will use their own bodies to create the poses. Then paint the figures, cut them out and arrange them into a finial mural with the other figures.
Time:
2 Class Periods (50 minute sessions)
Objective:
Identify, recognize and apply the elements of art in an aesthetic composition based on Keith Haring´s "Dance" series
Learn to work in a small group to create a class life size mural
Materials:
Pencils
Samples and Bio of artist Keith Haring
Tempera paint
White butcher paper
Paint Brushes
Paint palettes
Scissors
Activity for Second, Third and Fourth Grade Students:
Day 1
1. Introduce artist Keith Haring to the class and show samples his work
2. Ask questions about how Haring's art shows unity and movement
3. Separate class into groups of 3
4. One student will lay down on the butcher paper in a dancing pose
5. The other students in the group will trace the students pose
6. All members of the group will paint the interior color of the figure
7. Then outline the figure with black paint
8. The paint will dry while group cleans up paint brushes, palettes and floor
Day 2
9. Cut out figure
10. Glue figure with other group's figures onto a large piece of white butcher paper
11. Add movement lines around figures
12. Hang on wall
