
Students will draw their own shoe, practicing observational drawing skills and shading techniques.
Time:
50 minutes (one class period)
Objectives:
Develop skills in observational drawing
Use of spacial concepts to place the object in an environment
Develop understanding of foreground and background
Introduction to shading- highlight, shade and shadow
In younger grades: draw connections between literature and art
Materials:
White drawing paper
Pencils
Crayons
Extra shoes as an alternative choice
Pete the Cat; Rocking in My School Shoes
Activity for Kindergarten and First:
1. Read Pete the Cat; Rocking in My School Shoes
2. Discuss project and outline expected procedure
3. Have students remove one of their shoes (have alternative shoe available)
4. Students will trace their shoe while it lays on it's side
5. Have students fill in details of shoe using pencil
6. Use crayons to color in the shoe and surrounding background
Activity for Second, Third and Fourth Grade:
1. Discuss project and the concepts in shading using observational skills
2. Have students remove one of their shoes (have alternative shoe available)
3. Students can either trace their shoes while it lays on it's side or can free hand draw the shoe
4. Have students fill in details of shoe using pencil
5. Use crayons to color in the shoe and surrounding background
